Scholarships & Benefits

Government-Funded Aerospace Education

The federal government funds aerospace education at a scale no private organization can match. The SMART Scholarship covers full tuition at any U.S. school plus a $30K-$46K annual stipend — in exchange for a civilian DoD career. The DCTC is a brand-new civilian ROTC equivalent with $0 obligation to wear a uniform. DAF STEM programs pay high school students to do research at Air Force labs. And the GI Bill provides $150K-$250K+ in education benefits to those who serve.

These programs exist because the defense industrial base needs engineers, scientists, and technicians — and it's willing to pay for them upfront.

Which Program Fits

If you're in high school: Apply for Wright Scholar (3.5+ GPA, ages 16+). It's one of the only federally funded research programs open to high schoolers, and there's zero obligation.

If you're choosing a college and want aerospace paid for: SMART Scholarship is the best deal in STEM education — $200K+ total value at a public school, $400K+ at a private school, at the school of your choice. The obligation is a civilian DoD career, which is a career most applicants want anyway.

If you're at NC A&T, Purdue, Arizona, or Virginia Tech: Look at DCTC — it's new (first cohort Fall 2024), has the shortest service obligation (2 years), and includes a $10K summer internship.

If you're a veteran: GI Bill + SkillBridge is the most powerful combination. SkillBridge gets you employed at Boeing, Lockheed, or GE while still on military pay. GI Bill funds your degree or flight ratings afterward. Total value: $150K-$250K+.

SMART Scholarship: the numbers. Average GPA of selected scholars: 3.70. Acceptance rate: 8%. But 16% were joint BS/MS students — if you're planning an accelerated degree, that's a competitive advantage. Application opens August 1 and closes the first Friday of December at 5 PM EST. Don't miss the deadline.
