Test pilot school is the most selective aviation program in the world. AFIT is the military's own graduate engineering school. Guard and Reserve aviation is the "best of both worlds" — fly military aircraft part-time while building a civilian career. These are the advanced options that open up years into a military aerospace career.
None of these are entry-level. Test pilot school requires 1,000+ hours and ~12 years of preparation. AFIT requires an assignment nomination. Guard/Reserve hiring is interview-based with 100+ applicants per slot. But understanding these programs early helps you plan the 10-15 year arc of a military aerospace career.

Combined, USAF TPS and USNTPS have produced 162+ NASA astronauts. In NASA's 2025 astronaut class, 4 of 10 (40%) were TPS graduates. Requirements: Captain/Major rank, 1,000+ hours (1,500+ competitive), engineering degree (3.0+), strong performance reports. Timeline from high school to TPS graduation: ~12-14 years.

AFIT research centers include the Applied Research Center for Hypersonics (ARCH) with 159 theses since 2002, and the Autonomy and Navigation Technology (ANT) Center. Joint AFIT/TPS program: 15 months at AFIT + full TPS curriculum.
Guard & Reserve Aviation
Fly military aircraft part-time while building a civilian career. The Air National Guard operates 100+ flying squadrons including 25 fighter squadrons (F-16, F-15, F-35A, F-22, A-10). Army Guard runs 8 combat aviation brigades. Air Force Reserve operates ~50% of C-5/C-17 airlift capability.

Planning the Long Arc
Military aerospace careers are measured in decades, not semesters. Here's what the timeline looks like:
- Years 1-4: Academy/ROTC/OCS → commission → flight school or engineering assignment
- Years 4-8: Operational flying or engineering work. Build hours, expertise, and performance record.
- Years 8-12: Eligible for advanced programs — TPS, AFIT, or Guard/Reserve transition. This is the critical decision point.
- Years 12+: TPS graduation → test flying, NASA astronaut application, or senior leadership. AFIT → AFRL research, acquisition, or industry transition. Guard/Reserve → airline career + part-time military flying.
The Guard/Reserve airline pipeline is the most common post-military aerospace career path. A Guard pilot flying F-16s on weekends while captaining a 737 for Delta during the week earns $300K+ combined and gets military benefits, airline seniority, and the best flying in the world — two aircraft, two missions, two careers.
