Machine Learning Fundamentals

  • Explain the bias-variance tradeoff. How does it manifest in predictive maintenance models?
  • What's the difference between L1 and L2 regularization? When would you use each in a sensor data model?
  • How do you handle class imbalance? (Failures are rare events in aerospace data.)
  • Explain cross-validation. Why is time-series cross-validation different from standard k-fold?
  • What metrics would you use to evaluate a Remaining Useful Life prediction model?

Physics-Informed Neural Networks

  • How does a PINN's loss function differ from a standard neural network?
  • What are collocation points and why do they matter?
  • When would a PINN outperform a pure data-driven model? When would it underperform?
  • How would you validate a PINN against a traditional CFD solution?

Reinforcement Learning

  • Explain the difference between on-policy and off-policy algorithms. Which is better for spacecraft docking?
  • What is reward shaping? Why is it critical for aerospace RL applications?
  • How do you handle the sim-to-real gap in autonomous flight?
  • Describe how you would design a reward function for a collision avoidance agent.

Computer Vision

  • Explain how YOLO achieves real-time object detection. What are the tradeoffs vs. two-stage detectors?
  • How would you train a defect detection model when you have very few examples of defects?
  • What is transfer learning and how would you apply it to satellite image analysis?

Practice your answers out loud. Technical interviews evaluate your ability to explain concepts clearly, not just know them. If you can't explain the bias-variance tradeoff to a non-ML aerospace engineer, you need more practice.

AI + aerospace interviews almost always include domain-specific questions that pure ML candidates stumble on.

  • What is DO-178C and why does it matter for AI in aviation?
  • What is Verification & Validation (V&V)? How does it differ for ML vs. traditional software?
  • What are Design Assurance Levels (DAL A–E)? Which levels might allow ML?
  • The FAA classifies AI into risk levels. What are they and what can each level do?

Export Control

  • What is ITAR? How does it affect your ability to work with international colleagues?
  • Can you publish research involving ITAR-controlled data? What precautions are needed?
  • How does ITAR affect open-source contributions in aerospace AI?

Domain Knowledge

  • What is a turbofan engine's operating cycle? Which parameters are most predictive of degradation?
  • What is the difference between a predictive maintenance alert and a prognostic?
  • How does a Kalman filter work? Why is it foundational to aerospace navigation?

You don't need to be an expert in DO-178C. But you need to know it exists, why it matters, and why certifying ML is hard. This signals domain awareness and sets you apart from pure ML candidates who have never heard of certification standards.

For AI + aerospace roles, structure your technical skills to highlight the combination:

  • Programming: Python, MATLAB, C++, SQL
  • ML/AI: PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, OpenCV, Stable-Baselines3
  • Aerospace Tools: OpenVSP, XFLR5, OpenFOAM, Ansys STK, SolidWorks
  • Data: Pandas, NumPy, SQL, data pipeline design

List specific tools, not categories. "PyTorch (2 years)" beats "machine learning frameworks."

Behavioral Interview Preparation

Behavioral interviews assess how you work, not just what you know. Aerospace companies weigh these heavily because teamwork, safety culture, and communication are non-negotiable.

Situation — set the context. Task — what was your responsibility. Action — what you specifically did. Result — what happened, with numbers if possible.

Prepare 5 stories, not 50. Five well-developed STAR stories can be adapted to answer virtually any behavioral question. Include at least one failure story — it's the most commonly asked and the one candidates prepare least for.

Networking and Getting Noticed

Conferences

AIAA SciTech (January) and IEEE Aerospace (March) are the two best conferences for AI + aerospace networking. Student registration is reduced, and both have dedicated student events. If you present a paper or poster, hiring managers come to you.

Open Source

Consistent contributions to ArduPilot, PX4, PhysicsNeMo, or DeepXDE put your name in front of people who hire for exactly these skills. A merged PR is a public, verifiable signal of competence.

Publishing

Even a workshop paper or extended abstract signals that you can do original research. Student paper sessions at AIAA and IEEE are designed for undergrads and early-career grad students.
