The Timeline
AI in aerospace is not new — it is older than most people realize. What has changed is the type of AI, the available compute, and the ambition of the applications.

Key insight: Aerospace has always adopted AI — but cautiously and decades behind the commercial sector. The gap between "AI can do this" and "AI is certified to do this on an aircraft" has historically been 10–20 years. That gap is narrowing.
The Apollo Era: When AI Was Hard-Coded
The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) is arguably the first AI system deployed in aerospace — though its creators would not have used the term. Designed by MIT's Instrumentation Laboratory under Margaret Hamilton, the AGC used priority-based task scheduling to manage navigation, guidance, and control in real-time with just 74 KB of memory and a 1 MHz processor.
Why It Matters
During Apollo 11's lunar descent, the AGC threw a 1202 alarm — a priority overflow caused by a radar switch left in the wrong position. Hamilton's priority scheduling architecture allowed the computer to shed lower-priority tasks and continue the critical descent guidance. The landing succeeded because the software was designed to handle situations its programmers hadn't anticipated.
This principle — designing AI systems that degrade gracefully under unexpected conditions — remains the central challenge of aerospace AI six decades later.

Expert Systems and the First AI Winter
In the 1980s, AI meant expert systems — software that encoded human knowledge as rules and used inference engines to draw conclusions. NASA was an early adopter.
NASA CLIPS
NASA's Johnson Space Center developed CLIPS (C Language Integrated Production System) in 1985 — an expert system shell that became one of the most widely used AI tools in government. CLIPS was used for satellite fault diagnosis, Space Shuttle payload management, and mission planning.
DARPA and the Strategic Computing Initiative
DARPA invested $1 billion in AI during the 1980s through the Strategic Computing Initiative, targeting autonomous vehicles, speech understanding, and battle management. Most programs underdelivered against their ambitious goals.
The Knowledge Bottleneck
Expert systems failed to scale because they required manual knowledge engineering — human experts had to articulate every rule. A turbine engine expert might know intuitively that a certain vibration pattern indicates bearing wear, but converting that intuition into formal rules proved impossibly time-consuming for complex systems.
The lesson: Rule-based AI works for well-defined, narrow problems. It breaks down when the problem space is too large or too nuanced to enumerate manually. This is exactly why machine learning — which learns patterns from data rather than from hand-coded rules — eventually displaced expert systems.
The AI Winter (Late 1980s–1990s)
When expert systems failed to deliver on their promises, funding collapsed. AI research entered a decade-long winter. Aerospace companies returned to traditional methods — and many of the engineers from that era remain skeptical of AI claims today. Understanding this history helps explain why some experienced aerospace professionals are cautious about the current wave.
The Statistical Methods Era
While "AI" fell out of favor, statistical methods quietly became essential to aerospace — often without being labeled as AI.
Kalman Filters
Rudolf Kalman's 1960 paper introduced the filter that bears his name — an algorithm that optimally estimates the state of a system from noisy sensor data. Every GPS receiver, every inertial navigation system, and every modern autopilot uses Kalman filtering. It is arguably the most impactful algorithm in aerospace history.
Bayesian Networks
Probabilistic graphical models that reason under uncertainty. Used for fault diagnosis (what caused this sensor reading?), risk assessment, and decision support. NASA adopted Bayesian methods for Space Shuttle risk analysis.
Support Vector Machines (SVMs)
One of the first "machine learning" methods to gain traction in aerospace. SVMs were used for satellite image classification, structural health monitoring, and anomaly detection in the 2000s. They required less data than neural networks and were more interpretable — both important in aerospace.

Don't skip the classics. Kalman filters, Bayesian inference, and signal processing are not "old" AI — they are the foundation that modern ML builds on. An aerospace AI engineer who only knows neural networks and not Kalman filtering has a serious gap.
The Deep Learning Inflection Point: 2015–Present
Three things converged around 2015 to create the current AI boom:
- GPU compute became affordable. NVIDIA GPUs designed for gaming turned out to be perfect for training neural networks. What took weeks on CPUs took hours on GPUs.
- Data became abundant. GE's 44,000 engines stream terabytes of sensor data. Satellites capture daily global imagery. Flight data recorders log hundreds of parameters per second.
- Algorithms matured. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for computer vision, recurrent networks (RNNs/LSTMs) for time series, and later transformers for sequence modeling all reached practical accuracy thresholds.

What's Different This Time

What Could Still Go Wrong
- Certification bottleneck. If regulators cannot figure out how to certify ML systems for flight-critical applications, the highest-value use cases stall.
- AI winter redux. If generative AI hype collapses and takes general AI funding with it, aerospace AI programs at companies could lose budgets.
- Talent mismatch. Most ML engineers don't know aerospace. Most aerospace engineers don't know ML. If the cross-training gap doesn't close, adoption slows.
- Trust gap. Pilots, controllers, and mechanics need to trust AI tools before they'll use them. Premature deployment of unreliable AI could set back adoption for years.
The bottom line: This wave of AI in aerospace is built on stronger foundations than previous ones. Production deployments exist, the investment is real, and the workforce demand is measurable. But certification, trust, and the hype cycle are genuine risks. Build real skills — not buzzword familiarity — and you'll be valuable regardless of which specific AI trends persist.
