Multi-Sensor Fusion for GPS-Denied Drone Navigation

GPS is the backbone of drone navigation — but it doesn't work everywhere. Indoors, underground, in urban canyons, under dense foliage, and in military jamming environments, drones must navigate without satellite signals. GPS-denied navigation is one of the hardest and most important problems in autonomous systems.
In this project, you'll build a multi-sensor fusion system that combines:
- Visual odometry — estimating motion from camera images using OpenCV feature tracking
- Inertial navigation — integrating accelerometer and gyroscope data from an IMU
- Extended Kalman Filter — fusing both sources optimally, compensating for each sensor's weaknesses
You'll test everything in PX4 SITL simulation with a simulated camera and IMU, then evaluate position accuracy compared to ground truth.

Step-by-Step Guide
Set Up PX4 SITL with Gazebo
Install PX4 Autopilot SITL with Gazebo simulation. Configure a drone model with a downward-facing camera and IMU. Gazebo provides ground truth position — essential for evaluating your navigation system's accuracy.
Fly the drone manually first and log camera images and IMU data. This gives you a dataset to develop your fusion system against.
Implement Visual Odometry
Using OpenCV, implement a visual odometry pipeline:
- Detect features in each camera frame (ORB or FAST keypoints)
- Match features between consecutive frames (brute-force or FLANN matcher)
- Estimate the essential matrix and recover relative rotation and translation
- Chain relative poses to get cumulative position estimate
Visual odometry gives good short-term accuracy but drifts over time. Measure how quickly your position estimate drifts vs. ground truth.
Implement Inertial Navigation
Build a strap-down inertial navigation system (INS): integrate accelerometer data twice to get position, and integrate gyroscope data to track attitude. Implement a rotation matrix or quaternion to transform accelerations from body frame to navigation frame.
Without corrections, IMU-only navigation drifts rapidly — position error grows quadratically with time. Even a "good" IMU will be off by meters after 30 seconds. This is why sensor fusion is essential.
Design the Extended Kalman Filter
Implement an EKF that fuses visual odometry and IMU data. The state vector includes: position (3D), velocity (3D), attitude (quaternion), and optionally IMU biases (gyro + accel).
- Prediction step: propagate state using IMU data (high rate, ~200 Hz)
- Update step: correct using visual odometry (lower rate, ~30 Hz)
Tune the process and measurement noise covariance matrices (Q, R). These control how much the filter trusts each sensor.
Test in Simulation
Run the full fusion pipeline on PX4/Gazebo simulation data. Compare three position estimates against ground truth:
- Visual odometry only
- IMU integration only
- EKF-fused (both sensors)
The fused estimate should significantly outperform either sensor alone. Calculate RMS position error for each approach over flights of 1, 5, and 10 minutes.
Add Optical Flow
Implement dense optical flow (Lucas-Kanade or Farneback method) as an additional velocity measurement source. Optical flow from a downward camera gives ground-plane velocity when altitude is known. Add this as a third measurement in your EKF.
Compare the 2-sensor and 3-sensor fusion performance. Does adding optical flow significantly reduce drift?
Stress Test and Document
Test failure modes: What happens when the camera is temporarily obscured (simulating fog or darkness)? When the IMU has excessive noise? When there are few visual features (flying over water or snow)?
Document your results with trajectory plots, error analysis, and sensor comparison. This is directly publishable quality work if the results are solid.
