United Airlines

Major U.S. airline based in Chicago that runs the Aviate pilot development program and owns a flight school, United Aviate Academy, in Goodyear, Arizona.

Overview

United Airlines is a major U.S. airline headquartered in Chicago, with hubs including Chicago O'Hare, Denver, Houston, Newark, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington Dulles. Aviate is United's pilot career development program, with entry points through partner universities and flight schools, United Express carriers, and Part 135 operators. United also owns United Aviate Academy, a flight school in Goodyear, Arizona, which was operating and enrolling classes in 2026. United Technical Operations hires licensed A&P technicians and also has non-licensed roles in ground equipment, facilities, and utility work.

Student Insights

Aviate and the Academy are different things

Aviate is the career program; United Aviate Academy is one flight school that feeds it. Academy students train toward a commercial pilot certificate with instrument rating and can then apply to Aviate. Read the transition requirement carefully: the Academy's site says an Aviate participant can move directly to United as a First Officer after 2,000 flight hours with an Aviate-participating Part 135 operator AND at least 24 months at that same partner in a named leadership position (Chief Pilot, Director of Operations, Director of Safety, a Fleet Training/Technical/Standards Captain, or - only at JSX - Line Captain). That is a much narrower bar than simply flying for a partner for two years. Academy application windows open and close; in September 2026 the Academy site showed 'Applications closed' with a sign-up to be notified.

Maintenance without a license yet

United's Tech Ops page directs people who already hold A&P certificates to Aircraft Maintenance Technician openings, and people who do not to ground service equipment, facilities, and utility roles. United launched the Calibrate technician apprenticeship in 2022, but it no longer appears on United's careers site as of September 2026, so do not plan around it without checking with United.

Dispatch

An FAA aircraft dispatcher certificate is required. Under 14 CFR 65.53 you can take the knowledge test at 21 but must be 23 to hold the certificate.

AI Outlook

Exploring

Pilot, dispatcher, and A&P technician jobs are FAA-certificated roles. Data and AI tools support planning and maintenance analysis but do not change the certificate requirements for entry.

Application Tip: Enrolling at United Aviate Academy does not by itself give you a job offer. The conditional job offer comes with acceptance into Aviate, and you still have to meet the program's experience and performance requirements.
