FedEx

Memphis-based package carrier operating one of the world's largest cargo airlines, with the Purple Runway pilot pathway and a feeder network where pilots build time.

Overview

FedEx operates one of the largest civil aircraft fleets in the world from its main hub at Memphis International Airport, with a second national hub in Indianapolis. The airline was long known as FedEx Express; in June 2024 FedEx merged FedEx Ground and FedEx Services into Federal Express Corporation as part of its Network 2.0 restructuring, and the air operation continues under that company. FedEx also contracts a feeder network of nearly 300 smaller aircraft serving more than 250 locations. FedEx hires experienced pilots directly and offers Purple Runway as a development route that starts at those feeder airlines. It also employs aviation maintenance technicians and runs corporate internships.

Student Insights

Pilot minimums

FedEx lists 1,500 hours of fixed-wing time, an ATP certificate, a first-class medical, and at least 500 hours as pilot in command in jets or equivalent aircraft, with 1,000 preferred. A bachelor's degree is preferred.

Purple Runway

Purple Runway is FedEx's pathway program: pilots start at one of the airlines in the FedEx feeder network, which flies nearly 300 smaller aircraft to more than 250 locations, and work toward a FedEx job from there. Flying turboprop freight for a feeder is a common way to build pilot-in-command time.

Dispatch and maintenance

FedEx employs aviation maintenance technicians across its network to troubleshoot and repair aircraft and keep flights on schedule. Airline dispatchers need an FAA aircraft dispatcher certificate: under 14 CFR 65.53 you can take the knowledge test at 21 but must be 23 to hold the certificate.

AI Outlook

Exploring

Pilot, dispatcher, and A&P technician jobs are FAA-certificated roles. Data and AI tools support planning and maintenance analysis but do not change the certificate requirements for entry.
